You read the title. You should know how I feel. This whole College Football Playoff idea is completely ridiculous. I thought I was over it, until I saw a clip from the Western Michigan Head Coach P.J. Fleck, go on a rant about how: 1. his teams undefeated 2. they will play in the cotton bowl. Here watch:
He was upset about going to the Cotton Bowl when his team was completely undefeated. The only other team, Alabama. Why for the love of God is there not an adept system in DI-A football yet?! There’s one for DI-AA, and it helped produce a No.2 overall pick in last years draft!
If I hear one more explanation about players missing classes, because every other D1 sport HAS A PLAYOFF AND EXTENDED SEASON. And their “sub division” HAS A PLAYOFF SYSTEM ALREADY IN PLACE! If it’s about the money that is involved within the “bowl” games then that shows how morally bankrupt our society is when it comes to sports and these kids lives. The millions of dollars the games generate do not go into the people who actually earned the chance to play in those games so until then, I don’t want to hear it. I’ll listen, but you won’t get me on board. It’s a flawed system and that’s a topic for another day.
Here’s my proposition if you will, about how the playoff system in D1-A (seriously, two divisions), should work. Ahem.
Regular season games are played between conference and out of conference games. There will not be anymore “rankings” because they are nothing but subjective Power Rankings. Seriously, it’s like 10 guys sitting around the TV and rating who their favourite teams are, making a list and telling everyone that its absolute. AND WE GO FOR IT. The Warriors were not the number one team in the NBA last year because they were put on a Power Ranking system by Joe Nobody. They were number one because they won the most games in their conference! UGH!
Anyway, the teams would then do their conference playoffs which they already have in placed. Those winners will then be the top seed of the Playoffs and everyone else will fall in place based on their finish in the conference and their records. That’s 19 Conferences, including branched divisions of East and West (I.e. SEC West) and Independents, with a top seeded bye. Maybe we get fancy and throw in a Play-in Game? Each conference represented by top two teams, slugging it all the way out for the real National Championship.
Oh, the Bowl Games will still be around as well. But as a consolation prize. Such as the NIT Tournament that runs adjacent the National Championship. You’ll make your money people. The “Sponsors” of the Bowl Games can also be sponsors of the Playoff rounds because what would be the Bowl Season without the Fiesta Bowl, Orange Bowl, Cotton Bowl, Rose Bowl, Peach Bowl and the Dollar General Bowl. We can have the Dunkin Donuts Quarterfinals, Turbo Tax Play-in Game, etc. So many room for activities!
Listen, this all sounds good and dandy. But let’s be real, this won’t happen. Our ethics in sports have been doused with green bleach that seethes into our lifeline forever, paralyzing us from progress. It’s like the media has lobotomized us so we can never, ever, change the way things are and just accept the process because, they know we’ll just eat it up anyway.
So let this be a pipe dream. Sort of a talking anchor, where conversation can be started to help progress this whole College Football Playoff flawed system. Until then, let’s put on our rose colored glasses, obey these ridiculous, subjective, money lead, absolute Power Ranking in place for a real ranking system, root for our teams and hope teams like Western Michigan (I hate the pluralization of single phenomena i.e. Tom Brady’s of the world, Andrew Rogers’ of the world. THERE’S ONLY ONE, they’re unique and no one is like them, so stop) and others will get their just due; in the future.
