Sixers Upgrades: Guard Play

The Sixers are deep in the front court with elite and upcoming talent. But what they lack is in the backcourt. Shooting wise, here’s where the Sixers rank in the NBA based on range:

  • In less than 5ft: 13th at 59.7%
  • 5-9 FT: 25th at 34.4%
  • 10-14 FT: 24th at 36.2%
  • 15-19 FT: 29th at 32.8%
  • 20-24 FT: 16th at 36.4%
  • 25-29 FT: 10th at 36%

I know the new new is to do away with the midrange…but DeMar DeRozan is making an MVP case with the mid-range this year shooting 46% so yeah…it can be done.

Being that the Sixers are “lacking talent” in the guard positions:

Nik Stauskas is the only guard shooting over 40% with at least 3 attempts per game at 45.1%.

Seeing these numbers should be staggering for any team that is up and coming.

Yes, you’re finishing at the rim at a high rate, but besides that, defenses can shrink the floor at all times and force the shot. Luckily, the Sixers are hitting from deep this year, at 7th in percentage (36%) but they’re last in the mid-range at 32% to the Warriors’ 45.7%.

The mid-range game isn’t dying, less players are making them. And the Sixers have talent, but not at the guard positions. Some changes need to be met to truly be contenders in the future and that all lies outside the paint.
