Numbers Don’t Lie: Okafor May Need To Be On The Move

I would like to start off by stating: Jahlil Okafor is a talented young player with a high upside, and will be a perennial All-Star in this league.
I will then finish by saying: He needs to be traded….ASAP.

For a player with so much talent, averaging 10.5 PTS, 3.5 REBS and 1 AST per game a 9.0 PIE (Player Impact Estimate). It’s unfathomable that a 7 foot Center cannot get more than 3 rebounds per game. The 10 Pts/per is a sharp decline in production from a rookie season of averaging around 7.5 more per game. His rebounds have faltered by HALF of the numbers of the previous season. That’s just unproductive.

His play has also hurt the team as well. In losses, his has per game average of 11 Pts, 3.9 Rebs,  with a -6.8 +/-. The teams offensive rating is 90.5 and defensive is 107.3.

In wins he’s averaging 8.3 pts per game and 2.3 rebounds per game with a 2.3+/-. The teams offensive rating is 105.8 and defensive is 103.7 with a Net of 2.1.

The losses and wins are equivalent to two things: Joel Embiid’s production and Okafors not fit for this team.
Joel Embiid (18 pts, 7.6 reb, 1.2 Ast, 16.2 PIE) has made Okafor obsolete in this organization.

He has become one of two odd big men out for this team, the latter being Nerlens Noel. Embiid’ emergence after two years of absence has brought a resurgence to the City of Brotherly Love. His energy and skill cannot be matched or emulated. He has become the heart and soul of this team. That is until Ben Simmons returns.

It’s not just Embiid who’s out performing Okafor. Erason Ilyasova in comparison to Okafor’s production is out performing him in Assist ratio (9.6 to 8.1), Reb %(10.5 to 9.6), EFG% (52.1) and PIE (9.5 to 9.0). As well as having a net rating 4.6 points higher (-8.7 to -13.3).

Okafor’s drop off can be attributed to his rehab from Knee Surgery, and also to the style of play the Sixers are trying to run. Either way, Okafor will be a great player in this league. But he may not be a great fit for this team going forward. The Sixers  should try and get a return on their investment with some guard play this coming season to help complement their growing pieces of Embiid and Simmons.
