For this, I am not shocked. The Knicks have gone in the tank last year 17-65 and to an improved below .500 this year at 23-31, to the chagrin of management they had to pull the axe out on Fishers 40-96 tenure.
Derek Fisher was not a great fit at all to coach this team or any in my own opinion. He may have played under Phil Jackson, who is the GM of the Knicks, but it doesn’t mean you are Phil Jackson or a great coach.
He became a HC fresh out of the league. Only Jason Kidd should have the ability to do so because you know, he’s a Hall of Fame PG!
The offense is at a horrendous 24th in FG%, 12th in turnovers, 18th in Assists but lead the league in FT%. Their defense is no better, giving up 101.1 points a game for 25th in the league. He just couldn’t get it right his year.
The off court incident with Matt Barnes this year, marked with the implementation of the Triangle offense to a team who can’t run the Triangle offense, and Carmelo Anthony’s sub par playing this year because of soreness to his surgically repaired knee the Knicks were going to underperform.
With Derek Fisher out, Kurt Rambis will take the helm in Gotham to help the Knicks compete and get to playing consistent basketball. But he may just be band aid on a wound:
This was a great move by Phil Jackson who is turning this team around one move at a time. Expect the Knicks to make a big splash in the trade market or free agency to get them to the midtable of the East.
