Tonight is the National Championship. The heralded game that immortalizes college programs and a reception of a giant pool of money for the universities. But honestly, it may be the worst “playoff” ever conceived.

For years, we have ached for a real playoff atmosphere instead of using a stat system to choose who is the best ranked team or top 25 out of 128 to see #1 and #2 square off. But Money Bowl Games have been too popular for colleges and universities with a hopeful payout of 400k-$1 mil per Forbes. 

What do we have now? Well, we still have Bowl Games and now we have a playoff! With 4 TEAMS!!!! This is a joke.

I get there is a panel of judges and experts that pick to top 25 out of 128 that’s fine. And now, there is a playoff in effect. But what about the other teams?

The NCAA Basketball Tournament features 68 teams up from 64. 68 out of 347 teams have a chance to win a championship. Yes, some are slighted to win more than others. However, at least they HAVE A SHOT. Give these schools and teams a chance. You have the conferences and you have the resources, let them play it out.

Four teams are not enough. There needs to be more. A true test of will and superiority. A chance for teams to play on a big stage and gain more recruits. At least a chance to make a name for themselves even if they do get slaughtered by a top dog like Alabama. 

60 teams could be a lot, but at least a 32 team tournament that would count as Bowl Games and the winner advances will fare better than this abomination. Seasons could be cut short or start earlier but, a real playoff will show who’s the true national champion. Because, how can you be a champion if you haven’t beaten everybody? Because a group of people picked you to be the top two? That’s it? That’s entitlement, and not an accomplishment.

Stop spoiling these schools and see if your golden money cashcow organizations sorry, Universities and Colleges, go through the gauntlet to earn what they believe they deserve. If they lose, so be it. Get better. If the smaller schools win, hello! More money to you! You have a Cinderella story. That makes more than any top program could help. And it’s not just about money, its competition. Better competition brings more viewers. We can only hope there is a reinassance in the playoff landscape that can garner a better product than what we have now.
